BDT Training Program

starts september 2019. registration opens this summer

This 30 week program (two semesters) trains the whole dance artist with intent of furthering their dance career in higher education. This program will prepare dancers for the rigor and quality of work that is expected in college programs rooted in the research and values of BDT. Ballet, modern, improvisation, composition, acting, somatics, and special topics in dance will accompany performative work as students discover their voice as an artist. The BDT Training Program is open to students ages 16-20.

Ballet (F/S)

Rooted in Vaganova and American Ballet technique, dancers will continue to build on technical foundations as they focus on expanding the breadth of their repertoire. Students will focus on increasing performative techniques inspired by contemporary ballet trends and values - especially the circularity of movement, expansion of ballet shapes and forms, and diversified dynamics. The approach to ballet encompasses strengthening full body awareness, control and balance, while embracing an explorative desire to reach beyond one's edges and empower individual choices. 

Modern (F/S)

Modern forms including Horton, Graham, Limon and Release technique will be explored incorporating floor work and inversions, teaching dancers techniques in how to negotiate this new relationship with gravity and space. Classes often include improvisation, either in and of itself, or as a layer of choreography - this encourages personal expression and artistic choice making. 

 

Improvisation (Fall)

A dancer must be versatile and comfortable thinking and acting on their feet (and other surfaces of the body). This class will develop a language for the dancer to adapt into their practice as we explore how to move as a community as well as individually acting and reacting to internal and external prompts.

 

Composition (Spring)

This course will draw from the improvisational studies from the fall as students use their resources to compose their own piece. The dancers will work closely with the teacher as they guide and challenge them to create new work, which will culminate in a performance at the end of the semester. Students will learn about lighting and other technical aspects of creating cohesive work for the stage.

Acting (F/S)

Many times a dancer is asked to tell stories through movement. This course will focus on how to create characters through movement through an exploration of techniques fundamental to acting; including understanding and creating motivation for movement, relationship dynamics, character analysis, and building ensemble. Each class will focus on specific exercises designed to build competency in each technique and confidence in performance.  

 

somatics (F/S)

Somatics is a field within bodywork and movement studies which emphasizes internal physical perception and experience. The term is used in movement therapy to signify approaches based on the soma, or "the body as perceived from within." In dance, the term refers to techniques based on the dancer's internal sensation, in contrast with performative techniques, such as ballet or modern. Yoga, breath work, and other modalities will be included to form a well- rounded practice of mind and body for the dancer.

 

special topics (F/S)

Professionals who specialize in dance, theatre, medicine and other topics will lead workshops with a special focus on what they do in the community. Dancers will also learn what steps to take to achieve their goals in higher education and beyond including but not limited to finding the best program for each dancer, auditioning, headshots and resumes, the ins and outs of financial aid, and the business of the dance industry. Dancers will also attend performances of national touring dance companies at the U of M Northrop Auditorium.

 

Supplemental Classes

Students are encouraged to attend community classes at no additional cost to round out their weekly training schedule.
